30 children played in an end-of-term Christmas Tournament at the
Bury Knights Junior Chess Club last evening. Everyone won a prize! With ages ranging from 5 to 14, there was a huge range of ability, but this was evened out somewhat by a piece handicap system. The stronger players had to give up a rook, or two pieces, or sometimes just a pawn or two. Nevertheless, most games were won by the higher-rated player.
The winner was William Sait, who won all four games. Second place on 3½ points was shared between Anita Somton and Alan John.
